Michigan GT Countdown: 3 Days to Target

I finally "let go" and decided to just go with the list I have been honing for weeks now and so I know I won't have any more model issues to deal with due to last minute switch outs. No reason to make a last minute change and then regret it over the weekend.
I will have to rely on experience, average dice rolls, and Force weapon awareness.
It is slightly calming though, to just accept that I have prepared to the best of my ability and all that is left is to let the chips fall where they may.

I did not get my Wave Serpent done. I discovered that my school schedule for the week was the opposite of what I believed it to be. Plus side is, that I have all my work taken care of now and I can push it from my mind until after the GT.

  1. I finished my wraithblades and all my touchups on Monday. Now I'm having a hard time getting myself back on track for my regular projects until after the weekend. I am happy that this has motivated me to do the little extras that I haven't been consistent on over the last ten years to a bunch of old units. It brought the army together more than I thought it would.

    1. Good job! Isn't it funny how preparing for an event can really prove to be a strong impetus for painting? I remember in 5th, I would build my little tournament lists to be around 75% painted models and the remainder were things that would need to be completed before I fielded them. I used to get alot of work done that way.
Yes, little things here and there can really bring a cohesive aesthetic to an army. Can't wait to see specifically what you've done!

  2. What's the list look like? Guardian or Dire Avenger heavy? I keep wavering between Warwalkers and Prisms. Also wondering if star engines on the walkers are worth it for the extra 3" of run...

    1. For their role in my list, Guardians work better than the Avengers I have found. My list transitioned away from Prisms actually. They stopped working for me pretty abruptly and I concluded it was because of other changes in the evolution of the list.
I have also pondered the Star Engines on the War Walkers. To be honest, I haven't even fielded a War Walker yet with the new codex. In my opinion, they really need the list built around them because of the tradeoffs they have. I don't think they are one of those plug and play units. But their damage output is alluring, isn't it?
I'm very excited to get this tournament out of the way so I can really start experimenting with the new codex. I think I have a firm enough grasp of how the new Eldar fit into the overall 40k scene, and soon it will be time to start manipulating that perceived role.
I'll be posting my full list later in the countdown. I am amused by the notion of keeping it mostly secret from the Internet at the moment. :)

  3. I'm finding going over 3-4 Waves is cutting a lot of pts from other areas; at the risk of showing my hand (and getting opinions of the weakness of it and how it could be better) this is what I will probably run:

    Autarch (Bike/Banshee Mask/Lance/Mantle)

    x10 Guardians (Starcannon) + Wave Serpent SL/SC
    x10 Guardians (Starcannon) + Wave Serpent SL/SC
    x10 Guardians (Starcannon) + Wave Serpent SL/SC
    x10 Guardians (Starcannon) + Wave Serpent SL/SC

    X5 Bikes (Shuriken Cannon)
    X5 Bikes (Shuriken Cannon)

    x10 Warp Spiders (Exarch)

    Fireprism
    Fireprism
    x3 Vaul Vibro Cannons

Debated dropping some of the starcannon down to Shuriken Cannon and dropping a warpspider to make the HQ a farseer...but with Tau, bring some Prism on Round Two might be better with Autarch mod. There are so many things that ignore cover, it's $$$ and sometimes pointless toa dd Holos to everything.

  4. You've got an interesting build. Good on you for getting those Vibrocannons in there, they are a pet fancy for me at the moment. Though, in my experience, they benefit more from Guide than most things.
Well, I kind of like you Star Cannon battery you have going there. I'm not a huge fan of the weapon platforms as a whole simply because of the paradox they force, either the unit is embarked and not benefiting from the platforms, or they are not embarked and are therefore giving up the mobility of the Serpent. But, you gain added versatility to your firepower. So, its personal preference.

You could just drop a Starcannon completely instead of going down to a Shuriken cannon and put the points elsewhere. I would also, personally, take a hard look at the Spider Exarch and see if he is worth the points he takes up in this list.
The Serpent quantity, is indeed a slippery slope, but I am hesitant to throw numbers on it because it depends on the build. If some fool is bringing one of those maxed out Serpent Spam lists with five packs of Dire Avengers everywhere, I don't think they will do very well. Sure, they will absolutely roll some armies, but it isn't a good strategy for a seven round tournament by any means.
One additional question... If you are of the opinion that Holofields aren't worth their points becaus of how much Ignores Cover is out there, why do you spend the points on making cover the main part of how your HQ survives? One Seeker missile that gets through your 4++ is going to smoke that Autarch, and you KNOW there is going to be no shortage of Sky Rays around.
Why not just take a Farseer, put him in with the Vibros (For T7) and slap some Guide around? Your Fire Prisms will thank you if nothing else.
Heck, you might even be able to stretch your points enough to get those bike squads up to six and take another cannon. Better there than on Guardians if nothing else.

    1. Any, is a good idea on the autauch...just was using him for getting in, smoking a character in challenge, jumping away or just causing hell (easy to hide him completely behind something)...and the model looks cool :)...but aye, competive he's probably better with the vibros, and excess pts can be used elsewhere (Maybe a banshee squad for counter charge? lol

  5. hmmm even with the vibros, wont the average toughness be 3, when you count him and 6 crew?

    1. Not the case. Artillery rules mandate that T7 is used for resolving shooting attacks. Think about it, there are three guns and six gunners stock. Still T7.
