Adepticon is Nigh!

Greetings all! So Adepticon is a little over 2 weeks away.  We have 12 participants in the Schaumburg Prime Offensive in its inagural year at Adepticon.  There are 4 more spots open if anyone wants to register at the convention itself.  It is going to be a fun event.  At present we are preparing the objects involved with the contracts.  I, personally, am preparing for the trip.  I have also put in events for Halo Fleet Battles and Halo Ground command.  These events also have open spots still.  The old Spartan Games Halo games are still alive and strong.  Coday Nance and Doug Ummel are keeping the faith.  I am also proud to announce we have some swag coming directly from Studio 343 for the Halo events.

I just wanted to check in and give a little update.  I am really looking forward to adepticon and I plan on playing lots of pick up games for Infinity, Horus Heresy, Team Yankee and Godtear.  With the exception of INfinity I have yet to get games in for any of these games.  I have a back log and of course my game group has had game A.D.D. for a while now.  It will be nice to hang out in an atmosphere that fosters pure gaming.  I always feel invigorated during and after Adepticon. I am pretty excited. I have 8 days of work between me and adepticon.  I am getting things set for the A Billion Suns tournament.  I have a bunch of 3D printing to do.

Well thats all for now.  See You at Adepticon!

Back In The Saddle Again

Hello all.  SeerK here after a long hiatus and a rather busy holiday season.  Planning for 2018 has been in full swing.  The gang will be heading out to Adepticon in March.  I was hoping to be able to swing going to the Rumble on Route 66 in addition to going to Adepticon, but sadly its not in the budget.  I have a wedding to save up for.  That's right I am now engaged as of October.  This has put a bit of a kibosh on my convention travels.  I am attending Adepticon, Origins, Gencon, The Iowa Incident MK5, the Michigan GT and U-Conn Games Convention in 2018.  Still a decent amount, but not as many as I want to go to. I would love to do some more Dire States Infinity events as well as some more conventions on the east coast, near the west coast and down south.  These would namely be the NOVA Open, The Las Vegas Open and The aforementioned Rumble on Route 66.  There are several big Infinity Tournaments on the list as well. SO I left you kind of hanging in regards to Spartan Games stuff and Adepticon......

Adepticon: The Aftermath

Greetings all!  SeerK here once again.  It has been about a week and a half since I got home from Adepticon and I am finally feeling normal.  I was exhausted for a couple days after, especially since I had to play catch up on several fronts. This would be why I am only posting about the convention now.  This year was very fun but at the same time extremely exhausting.  We had 6 events running this year and all of them went pretty smoothly.  I am going to list off the winners and announce the winner of the one of a kind Cortana portrait done by Sarah Campbell who is one of the 3D modelers at Studio 343.  Our Halo Event participants are all in running for this great piece of Halo memorabilia.
So lets dive into the winners and some reflections on Adepticon 2017.

Adepticon! Almost Live

Greetings all.  I am in the trenches running the Spartan Games events at Adepticon.  The Halo Fleet Battles tournament is in the books as is The Schaumburg Clash! Dystopian Wars North American Championships.  The Russians took top honors in the Clash.  Congrats to Bob Schroeder on his win and claiming the title of North American Champion.  The Covenant dominated the Halo Fleet Battles tournament.  Andrew Karolus was crowned champion in the Fall of Reach.

We also premiered several new models at the convention.  STL Traders, Pathogen, OSO Corsairs will all have models very very soon.  The first Leviathan slipped its moorings to join the battle as well.  The Relthoza have been up to no good!  The Flashpoint Amber Campaign also kicked off today.  Check out the Firestorm Armada section of the Spartan Community forum for details.  Now for the picture dump!

New Spartan Games Podcast: Exploding Dice Radio

Logo by Tim " Miniature Tim"  Toolen
Greetings!  SeerK here once again.  This time I am here for some shameless promotion.  A new podcast will be released later this month.  Exploding Dice Radio on the Freebooters Network is a collaboration between myself and Andy "Ruckdog" Rucker of Man Battle Stations Podcast.  Exploding Dice Radio covers Spartan Games and nothing but Spartan Games.

Ruckdog and I will be talking tactics, new releases and previews, hobbying and whatever else we can squeeze in about our favorite games made by our favorite game company.

You will be able to get new episodes via the Freebooters Podcast Network  We just got done recording the first episode.  We are in the process of getting a blog set up, but you can send questions to edrpodcast@gmail.com.

We will have a new episode every month.  Our release dates are not set in stone as it will be posted when the network puts it into the rotation schedule.  I will post updates here and Ruckdog will be posting updates on the podcasts blog and over at Man Battlestations.

Next time I will be delving into game design.  I am in process of writing it and its taking longer than I thought it would.  I planned on it being a multi part series, but man we are really going down the rabbit hole.  We are also 2 weeks away give or take from Adepticon.  I will be doing daily updates and pictures dumps here and on Twitter.  If signal is good enough or we have wi-fi I will be doing some live streams as well.

Well back to writing and painting a metric butt ton of terrain.

Until next time crush the Alliance and as always...

The Road to Adepticon: Primer Missions!

Greetings all!  SeerK here with your mission briefing.  The team has labored long, but we have a set of Primer missions for all our events at Adepticon.  The exception is The FSA Mega Battle also known as the Flashpoint Amber Narrative event.  Spartan Neil and I are working on that currently.  The Narrative requires much more work as it ties into the impending Flashpoint Amber Campaign.  In fact is is going to be a major pivotal event in the campaign.  The Amber system hangs in the balance.  The Schaumburg system under Kurak control as of last years Championships.  Will they be able to hold it as the Zenian League unleashes hell upon them. The Stage is set and the trap has been sprung. Be a part of history as we unveil something never before seen at Adepticon 2017.............but first lets look at those Primer Missions!

The Road to Adepticon: Prologue

Greetings all.  SeerK here to start the flagrant promotion of Adepticon 2017.  For those of you new to all games Spartan and The WayGate, Adepticon is the biggest and best Miniature war games convention in North America.  Schaumburg Illinois plays host to this convocation of all things plastic, resin and metal.  For the past 2 years the WayGate staff and I have been putting on The Schaumburg Prime Offensive North American Firestorm Armada Championships.  Last Year we added Firestorm Planet Fall in the form of The Schaumburg Beach Head Planetfall GT.  This year we are growing......big time....

State Of The Union

Greetings all!  SeerK here and I am going to get a little philosophical.  Last week was quite an adventure.  You may say, “of course it was you went to the Nova Open!”  My response sadly would be no I didn’t.  I was unable to attend Nova due to some circumstances I would rather not go into, other than say I had to attend a Funeral.  We had a lot of setbacks with our planned trip.  It is setbacks I want to talk about.  Setbacks and a malaise that has gripped the community. Players and Spartan fans grumble about it, but nobody is really talking about the fact a lot of established communities and play groups seem to be dwindling in size to the point they cease to be.  I want to talk about it a bit, at least my take on it.  Join me won’t you.

I am going to use the local scene as my first example.  Things die down during the summer around here.  It doesn’t really matter what game it is.  Infinity is catching on and we ran a league this summer, but we only had 6 players participate.  Others are starting to play now that summer is winding down and people are itching to play again.  We have not done a whole lot of Firestorm Armada or Planetfall in the local are this summer.  Halo is pretty much not a thing here in Lansing.  I am going to be trying to change that, but the player base is kind of tuckered out.
I am hearing about this from a lot of places.  Attendance at The Nova Open was lackluster say for the build and play tournament.  It makes me worry a bit about the North American Championships at Adepticon this year.  I think we are seeing our first real community wide rough spot.  This is going to be a major test for Spartan.  The only communities that seem to be growing fast and gaining momentum are the Halo related ones.  They have a feel like FSA when 2.0 came out.
I think this is from a combination of things.  First and foremost I do not think the Vanguards are getting out there enough and in the right way.  Demo’s days and such get people into the game, but you have to be more involved than that.  If you cannot make it up to the shop on a weekly bases to help foster a growing community you should not be stepping up to lead it.  There is a lack of follow though.  There is also a lack of follow through on Spartans part.  We hear about stuff in the pipeline and plans for the future, but we are not seeing them come to life.  This has hurt Spartans credibility and the communities trust in them.  That is not a good thing.
Spartan is getting better and improving though.  Official play kits for the games and a marked increase in convention attendance is a good start.  The planning for shows and conventions is months in advance and they need somebody dedicated to doing it if they want to really get out there and get the community fired up.  They need somebody in the United States to do this.
The apparent supply problem has a bit to do with Spartan and more to do with the Distributors that shops use.  Golden Distribution is pretty much the only reliable one for Spartan product.  Most shops tend to use Alliance, who is terrible in my opinion, Southern Hobby and ACD.  I know Spartan has been working with the latter two to get products in and out to the players.  Shop owners will not carry stuff if there is no community to support it though.  It is a big investment getting a new game on the shelf.  This is where the Vanguards and local community cheerleaders come in.
Keep the community going and growing with follow through and regular attendance.  I know it is disheartening when people don’t show up.  I have gone to game nights and been the only person there for weeks. I still went though.  Sometimes you have to be the beacon to get things going.  I know real life is busy, but if you want a community to flourish, you have to put in the extra effort.

So to sum up.  Spartan needs to overhaul the Vanguard program, they need to kick some of the rule sets in the pants and follow through in a timely manner.  They also need a dedicated Event Coordinator in the United States.  The supply issues could be solved with their own warehouse here, but in lew of that they need to continue to work with the distributors to keep products in stock and restock regularly.
This is really dependent on all of us getting out there and getting our communities rallied and playing.  Not only playing, but buying stuff.  That’s what shops want to see.  Players buying locally, not on the internet.  I am not going to get into my view of internet only vendors, that’s a whole different post.

So join me in getting the community back on track and growing again.  It’s going to be tough, but if we want to see more events and have more players we really need to start working together to do it.  I am hoping Spartan plays ball as well and continues to improve.  Well that’s my two cents

Until next time, Crush the Alliance and as always…

NOVA is Nigh! Adepticon Planning Has Begun!

Greetings all!  SeerK here once again.  As many of you know I will be heading to the NOVA Open next week.  For once I am not running any of the events.  I will be playing in something FSA and maybe something Infinity while i am there.  My primary purpose is to award the top two winners of the FSA GT their golden tickets to The Schaumburg Prime Offensive North American Firestorm Armada Championships.  The winners have guaranteed spots in North Americas premiere Firestorm Armada event! Adepticon is quickly shaping up to be bigger and better than last year!

The Post Gencon Round Up!

Greetings all. SeerK here once again. It has been a couple days since I got home from Gencon and either the Pathogen got to me or a Tohaa sniper with a viral weapon scored a critical hit. I have the con crud pretty bad. I guess I was due. I have done the past 5 conventions without any incident. Hot tea, NyQuil and lots of rest has been my day today. So since I am stuck at home I thought it would be a prime time to do my post Gencon update. I am also planning on going on the Hub Systems Podcast if I am feeling better as well as finally getting some recording in with Phil on Firebase Delta. Stupid real life. So what were the highlights for me at Gencon? The Corvus Belli Seminar and working with Spartan Neil and Spartan Derek at the Spartan Games booth of course. Lets take a look!

Halo Gets Big: New Carriers!

SeerK here with a quick update.  Halo sees its next release, this time we are getting the big boys.  The Assault carriers are now available for your fleet.  Phil over at Firebase Delta was nice enough to get some pictures up over at the Facebook page.  The new ships look great and seem to be resin, which is a departure from the current Halo products.

So enjoy the Pics!

The 2nd Schaumburg Prime Offensive: The Road to Adepticon 2016

Greetings all!  The time has come to plan for Adepticon 2016!  The WayGate team is hard at work planning the 2nd Schaumburg Prime Offensive at Adepticon.  Missions are already mostly developed as is a new method of doing terrain.

We plan on being bigger and better this year and expanding the offering of events.  We have a learn to play Firestorm Armada class as well as the big show The Schaumburg Prime Offensive.  I am working on a format as well as logistics for a Planetfall Tournament as well if there is interest in the community for a Planetfall event.

I have a little Survey up at The WayGate Facebook Page that I would like to ask people to take a couple minutes and vote on.  We want to run an event that is professional and reflects the will of the community.  So we want to see what point level people would like to play at.  800, 900 or 1000 points?

Go Vote!

I apologize for the lack of updates.  The trusty laptop finally died and I am forced to try and work on posts at work.  I will be more vigilant in the coming weeks.  I have a bunch of events to plan for the Store as well as getting all my stuff together to run Firestorm Armada and Halo Fleet Battle Demos at U-CON in Ann Arbor.  Come check it out and say hi if you are in the area!

Until next time...

Halo Fleet Battles: SeerK's First Look

Greeting all!  SeerK here once again.  In this installment I am going to be looking at Spartan Games latest endeavor, Halo Fleet Battles.  It came as a surprise to many Spartan Games fans that they had teamed up with Studio 343 and Microsoft in making a game based on Halo.  This is the first IP licensed to Spartan Games and it is a biggy.  If there is one thing Spartan knows how to do very well, it's how to make a damn fun space ship game.  The first game using the new Halo IP is Halo Fleet Battles.  We have UNSC and Covenant space fleets battling it out in the depths of space.  Lets take a look.

The game engine for Halo Fleet Battles is completely new, but it borrows some game mechanics from other Spartan games.  The most notable difference though, compared to their other games, is that the game does not really use D6's.  You have a pile of "Halo Dice" which have hits misses and failures denoted by symbols on a 6 sided die.  The Spartan hallmark, The exploding dice Mechanic, is present, but not in its traditional form.  It is also limited.  No single frigates taking out Battleships in this game.  Another notable difference is that the ships are based differently.  We have car overlays with the ships stats on the bases and in the case of smaller ships, multiple ships on one base.

The game is divided into five phases

1.  Order Dice Phase
2. Wing Phase
3.  Battle Group Phase
4.  Boarding resolution Phase
5.  End Phase

You have a commander that you buy as part of your fleet.  From my understanding there will be more characters you can purchase as time goes on.  The first Commander pack is up for sale on Spartans website and a couple of the FLGS's in the area have them on their shelves.  The Commander and special characters allow you to do special attacks and actions via the Order Dice.  You roll the 5 order dice to start the turn off.  You arrange the dice on the commanders card and depending on what symbols you roll, it opens up options for special orders and actions.  If you roll any command Icons you can add these to your initiative roll.  Once you determine who gets the first activation, you proceed from the Order Dice Phase to the Wing Phase.

Much Like Firestorm Armada, Halo has alternating activations.  Unlike Firestorm Armada though, Halo has an entire phase dedicated to wings.  Bombers, boarding craft and the like all move and perform their actions independently of their parent ships.  Wings start on the table.  They move and engage each other and bigger ships.  They are represented by card stock tokens rather that resin SRS tokens.  I am still learning the game personally and it is recommended you skip the wings phase and using wings when you are first starting out as it would seem a lot of the complex interactions take place in this phase.  Interceptors and such block bombers and boarding craft rather than destroy them.  It would seem you can lock them up indefinitely if you so choose.  The wings phase is also how you deliver your boarding troops.  This is important for the UNSC as this is how you can really hurt Covenant ships.  Despite the numeric advantage the UNSC has a tough time dealing with Covenant vessels.

The Battle Group Phase is next.  This is where you move your Battle Groups.  Ships and Squadrons of ships that share a base are referred to as Elements.  Several Elements make up a Battle Group.  Several Battle Groups make up your fleet.  Every Element has a build rating.  When you are building your force it will have a point cap and each Battle Group cannot exceed 6 Build points.  A big heavy cruiser may have a build rating of 5, while a frigate squadron may have a build rating of 1.  Elements in a battle group move as a squadron would in Firestorm Armada.  You move your vessels, fire your weapons and then your opponent goes.  You go back and fourth until all the battle groups have activated.  I will go more in depth into the Battle group Phase and game play in general in our next installment.

The boarding resolution phase is next.  You resolve all the boarding actions you started in the wings phase.  This allows you to send Spartans and Zealots to your opponents ships in an effort to cripple or destroy them.  This is a hazardous endeavor though and usually results in the loss of the boarding troops if the vessel is destroyed.  There is a slim chance of survival though.

In the end phase you resolve all the miscellaneous tokens and statuses that your elements have acquired over the course of the turn. It is pretty standard fair for most war gamers.  I am still learning the game.  I think there was a misconception made by many gamers, that is that Halo would be something that was similar in nature to X-Wing.

That is not the case.  It is a full blown miniature war game that has a lot of depth and nuance.  It draws from Spartans other creations, but stands by itself as a new game engine.  It borrows elements for Firestorm Armada, its damage system from Firestorm Planetfall and its feel from Halo itself.

So far I like it.  next time we will go more in depth into the system and how it works.  We will also be continuing our look at the Relthoza in Planetfall.  I will have some reports form the front next weekend.  The Michigan GT is a week away and I will be there Running two Firestorm Armada tournaments as well as Playing in an INfinity ITS tournament.

Until next time crush the Alliance and as always..

Convention Update!: Gencon 2015

Greetings and salutations! SeerK here once again.  Its has been a slow month on the blog. and this is mostly because I have been going full tilt at the new job.  I have been painting mini's, making terrain and constructing tables.  If you have not heard, SeerK is now working at a game store.  B.C. Comix in Battle Creek Michigan to be exact. I have also been getting ready to go to Gencon.  I have been drafted by Wyrd and Spartan to do demos at Gencon 2015.  I have to say I am pretty excited. This is my first trip to Gencon.  I know what you are saying.  "SeerK...seriously....you have never been to Gencon?!?!"  This is indeed true.  In my 20+ years as a gamer I have never been, despite my proximity to the convention.

I decided that this year I was going to change that.  I have been to Adepticon for many years and attended Origins Game Fair this year, so I decided its about time I did Gencon too.  I will be running Malifaux demos for Wyrd once again.  Come see me for a game at the Wyrd Games booth.  I will also be running demos for Spartan Games.  Come see me Saturday of the convention for an intro to one of Spartans awesome games, or just come and say Hi!

I will be continuing my series on the Relthoza after Gencon.  I plan on doing at least one "almost live" post while I am at the convention.  I will be rooming with Tim Toolen aka "Miniature Tim" of the Miniature Tim Blog during the convention. so look for updates and plenty of pictures from both of us.  Firestorm Armada, Halo Fleet Battles, Malifaux and Infinity will be had.

Its going to be a busy week for me so stay tuned for updates later this week! I would also like to remind all the Firestorm fans that we still have spots left in the Firestorm Armada tournaments and Narrative events at the 2015 Michigan GT in our backyard of Lansing, MI. Sign up today as spots may fill up quick.  There are some locals being slackers and have not signed up yet.  Reserve your spot now!

until next time as always...
